A Living Recording Landmark

(Huey Lewis & The News), Supernatural (Santana), Before These Crowded Streets and Busted Stuff (Dave Matthews Band), Load and Reload (Metallica), Centerfield (John Fogerty), and many more.

Artists who have recorded within these hallowed walls include Sly Stone, Rick James, Heart, Journey, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Stevie Wonder, Jefferson Starship, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Doobie Brothers — along with countless others who helped shape modern music.

The Record Plant Legacy

Founded in 1968 in New York City by Gary Kellgren and Chris Stone, the Record Plant quickly became one of the most influential recording studio brands in the world. A Los Angeles location opened in 1969, followed by the Sausalito studio in 1972.

During the 1980s, Stone sold the Record Plant brand. The New York location closed in 1987, while the Sausalito studio continued operating under the name Plant Studios until its closure in 2008. The Los Angeles studio closed in 2024.

A New Chapter

After being closed for more than a decade, the former Record Plant Recording Studio in Sausalito began its path toward renewed operation when a group of investors led by producer Ken Caillat acquired the facility with the goal of reopening it.

Under the leadership of Chris Skarakis and Jim Rees, alongside strategic partner and patron Michael Seifert, the studio resumed operation in 2025 as 2200 Studios.

Today, 2200 Studios is operated by the nonprofit 2200 Music Foundation, which supports recording education, community access, and the preservation of this historic studio as a living, working cultural landmark.
